Three's a Charm:
Embellish Celebrates Its Third Anniversary with
Trunk Show to Benefit Kenyan Women
(Rocky River, OH - June 11, 2009) Half the globe away, Kenyan women shape mountain clay into colorful hand-painted beads. The work provides a wage three and a half times higher than the national wage of Kenya. And the results are spectacular. So beautiful, in fact, that Embellish arranged a special trunk show July 1-3 to introduce these Kazuri beads to local bead and jewelry enthusiasts.
"We are thrilled to offer this special event just as we celebrate our third year in business," said Laura Jacobs, owner of Embellish, the create-your-own-jewelry store at 19055 Lake Road in Rocky River.
 The Kazuri Beads Trunk Show will kickoff Wed. July 1 with a preview night, scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. (In conjunction with Club Embellish.) The trunk show will continue during store hours on Thursday, July 2 (11 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Friday, July 3 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.). A vast selection of these Kazuri beads will be available, ranging from $2-$10 each. An authorized dealer of these Kazuri beads will be on hand to tell the story of the women and their beautiful work. Also, all customers who RSVP will receive a free pattern to create a lariat featuring the Kazuri beads.
The Kazuri bead factory is just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Handcrafted ceramic beads are made from the African clay, dug by hand, from Mount Kenya. Kazuri (Swahili for "small and beautiful") produces a wide range of handmade, hand-painted ceramic beads that shine with a kaleidoscope of African colors. Each bead is shaped individually by hand without the aide of molds, forms or any modern machinery. The beads are painted with high gloss paint, then glazed to produce a smooth, shiny decorated product.
The Kazuri project began in 1975 to help disadvantaged women of the Kikuyu Tribe. A missionary couple helped revive the traditional bead-making process of the Kikuyu, as a means of providing employment for women, who at the time were not allowed in the work force. Today, as a member of the Fair Trade Federation, Kazuri pays its employees three and a half times the national wage in Kenya. Also, it provides free health care, day care and educates workers on AIDS and malaria. With staggering unemployment rates, one job holder often supports up to 20 members of their extended families.
In addition to the Kazuri Beads Trunk Show, Embellish will offer a number of special events to commemorate its third anniversary during the month of July, including a "Three's a Charm" event on Mon. July 27 (7-9 p.m.) inviting customers to make their own fine silver (.999) charms using Embellish's silver clay program. In addition, all attendees will sample food from The Pub Rocky River and enjoy chair massages from Charles Scott Salon & Spa. Cost is $35 to attend, and advanced registration is required.
Also, Embellish created its own custom charm to mark the occasion of its third anniversary. Half of sales from these "3's a charm" pendants (available in fine silver, as well as Polymer Clay starting in July) will be donated to the Rocky River Assistance Program and Dress for Success Cleveland, two non-profit organizations that have become favorites for Embellish's fund-raising efforts since the store's opening.
